Three (3) limited funding opportunities for tenure-track Assistant Professors are available. Because they are limited, the individuals who receive these awards are members of elite groups of researchers who participate in innovative, high risk/high reward biomedical research. Please read the following descriptions and the information on the websites provided carefully, note the internal deadlines and begin working on your pre-proposals for all three programs.

mdmoore@utmb.edu on or before April 15, 2020 at 5:00 pm. All pre-proposals will be reviewed by the Grants Review & Oversight Committee to determine which faculty will be nominated and go forward.
2021 Pew Biomedical Scholars
The Pew Scholars Program in the Biomedical Sciences provides funding to young investigators of outstanding promise in science relevant to the advancement of human health. The program makes grants to selected academic institutions to support the independent research of outstanding individuals who are in their first few years of their appointment at the assistant professor level.
- Full-time Assistant Professor on or after June 15, 2017
- May apply only two times
- $75,000/year for 4 years ($300,000)
- Non-US citizen must be legally employed at a United States degree granting or research institution.
Internal Deadline: April 15, 2020 by 5:00 pm
2021 Pew-Stewart Scholars for Cancer Research
The Pew-Stewart Scholars for Cancer Research supports assistant professors of outstanding promise in science relevant to the advancement of a cure for cancer. This program is distinct from the Pew Scholars Program, and it follows a different, but parallel set of guidelines and procedures for nominating an applicant whose research is related to cancer.
- Full-time Assistant Professor on or after June 15, 2017
- May apply only two times
- Demonstrate outstanding promise as a contributor in science relevant to the field of cancer
- $75,000/year for 4 years ($300,000)
- Non-US citizen must be legally employed at a United States degree granting or research institution.
- Awardee must attend an Annual Meeting held in March of each year.
* Investigators can only apply for one (1) Pew opportunity.
2021 Searle Scholars Program
The program was designed to support the independent research of outstanding individuals who are in the first or second year of their first appointment at the assistant professor level, and whose current appointment is a tenure-track position. Grants are made to selected academic institutions.
- Full-time Assistant Professor on or after July 1, 2018. (First tenure-track position)
- $100,000/year for 3 years ($300,000)
- Non-US citizen must be legally employed at a United States degree granting or research institution.
- Awardee must attend the Annual Searle Scholars Meeting, normally held in Chicago in April.

- Timeline including milestones for the funding period (4 years for Pew, 3 for Searle)
