Contact PI vs. PI/Co-I vs. Investigator
The contact PI is the person designated as the lead Principal Investigator of the proposal/award and has full responsibility and authority for the project. If a proposal/award is designated as multi-PI then other personnel may be designated as Principal Investigator or Co-Principal Investigator, which indicates they make significant contributions and has authority on the project but is not considered the lead PI. For reporting purposes, an Investigator is other personnel listed on the proposal/award with a role other than PI/Co-I.
Please note, the lead PI will be the only personnel listed on the award in PS, unless it is specifically requested for a Co-PI to tracking funding separately, at which time a second project will be created for that PI. All other personnel are listed in InfoEd since June 2023 for submitted proposals.
Primary Associated Department vs. Associated Department
The primary associated department is defaulted to the contact PI’s department but can be updated during the proposal phase. This department is considered the managing department of the proposal/award. Any other associated department listed on the proposal will show in InfoEd, but will not be indicated in PS, unless the funding is being split and managed by more than one department. If this is the case then the main project will be the Primary Associated Department and subproject(s) will be created for each additional associated department, as needed. However, this is only done when specifically requested. All awards are set by default under the primary associated department.
Please note, if a Primary Associated Department must be changed post-award then a new project will be created and the original project will be closed out.
Originating Sponsor vs. Direct Sponsor
The originating sponsor is the originating source of funds while the direct sponsor is the sponsor identified as the source of funding provided directly to UTMB. The originating and direct sponsor can be the same but will be different for flow-through awards. For example, if UTMB receives an award from NIH then both the originating and direct sponsor would be NIH. However, if a grant funded by NIH to University B and University B provides funding from that award to UTMB as a subaward then the originating sponsor would be NIH and our direct sponsor would be University B.
Sponsor Type vs. Reporting Sponsor Type
The sponsor type is used to identify whether the award is federal, institutional, local government, not for profit, other government, for profit or state government. For reporting and analytics purposes, the sponsor type is further defined into specific types including clinical trial, Department of Defense (DOD), for profit, Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), not for profit, National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Science Foundation (NSF), other federal, other government and state.
