In a letter sent to University leadership, dated May 27, 2022, the Cancer Prevention & Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT) announced a temporary halt in funding for Research and Recruitment awards for at least the next three funding cycles (22.1, 22.2 and 22.3).  Citing a 60% increase in high caliber recruitment nominees and an influx of new applications and renewals after cessation of of the Individual Investigator Research Awards (IIRAs) in the Spring of 2020, the letter stated that the Institute had expended its allocated budget for the 22.1 and 22.2  grant cycles and would need to carryover FY22 grant expenditures of $60 million into their FY23 budget.

CPRIT also announced that in FY23 additional measures would be implemented,  These include reducing the number of recruitment grants funded from 12 to 6 and limiting the number of applications per institution to one per cycle.  The goal is that these measures are temporary and by late 2023, the Institute will be able to resume monthly submissions and review cycles by fall 2023.
