Overview of US-Israel Binational Science Foundation Funding Opportunities

Dec 23, 2021, 10:58 AM by Melodi Moore

The US-Israel Binational Science Foundation looks back at a successful 2021 during which we were able to make 104 awards in the traditional BSF program among 380 proposals across exact sciences and social sciences disciplines. While hoping that the worst of the COVID pandemic is behind us we have restarted the Rahamimoff travel program for advanced graduate students. BSF received 26 proposals by the December 8 2021 deadline and we look forward to announcing the successful applicants in early 2022. In addition, BSF recorded new records in BSF-BSF submissions (225) and awards (75), an astounding 33% success rate. BSF is also pleased to announce two new NSF-BSF programs that are welcoming joint applications from Israeli and US scientists:

  •  The Research Resources Cluster of the Division of Biological Infrastructure. Currently, NSF-BSF proposals are welcomed only in the bioinformatics tracks of the Innovation and in the Capacity program of this cluster. These programs accept proposal submission without a deadline. You can find more details in our call for proposals here.
  • Organismal Response to Climate Change – This is a new, cross-disciplinary program. The upcoming deadline for NSF submissions is March 1 2022 (March 7 for BSF submissions). More detail can be found here.

We also would like to draw your attention to a change in the existing cross-disciplinary program Mathematical and Scientific Foundations of Deep Learning(MoDL):

  • Proposals in response to this call should be submitted to appropriate existing NSF programs in one of the participating divisions. A proposal must meet the requirements and deadlines of the program to which it is submitted, but should include the prefix "MoDL: ". You can find more details in our call for proposals here.

The following NSF-BSF programs have deadlines as specified:

Directorate of Biological Sciences:

  • NSF-BSF program in Enabling Discovery through Genomic Tools (EDGE). Deadline for application by the U.S. partner to the NSF is February 17, 2022 and by the Israeli partner to the BSF is February 23, 2022. Call for Proposals can be found here.

Cross Directorate Programs:

  • NSF-BSF program in Integrative Strategies for Understanding Neural and Cognitive Systems (NCS). Deadline for application by the U.S. partner to the NSF is February 14, 2022 and by the Israeli partner to the BSF is February 20, 2022. Call for Proposals can be found here.

The following NSF-BSF programs have no deadlines and are open for submission throughout the year:

  • NSF-BSF programs in Chemical, Bioengineering, Environmental, and Transport Systems are open to receive applications anytime throughout the year. Call for Proposals can be found here.
  • NSF-BSF program in Molecular and Cellular Biosciences is open to receive applications anytime throughout the year. Call for Proposals can be found here
  • NSF-BSF program in Integrative Organismal Systems (IOS) is open to receive applications anytime throughout the year. Call for Proposals can be found here
  • NSF-BSF program in Environmental Biology (DEB) is open to receive applications anytime throughout the year. Call for Proposals can be found here.
