The purpose of the preceptorship program is to introduce medical and graduate students to rheumatology-related health care by supporting a full-time clinical or research experience in the broad area of rheumatic disease.
Applicants have the option to select Clinical or Research when applying.
Note for clinical preceptorships: this preceptorship is not designed to replace a clinical clerkship in rheumatology. Programs should be designed as a "shadow" experience with the student
observing the preceptor. The student should not be expected to perform independent patient management.
Examples of such experiences would primarily include observing patient contact in the clinical office, accompanying the preceptor on rehabilitation facility visits, hospital rounds and/or conferences at the preceptor's institution.
Award Amount: $4,000 for an at least eight-week research or clinical preceptorship to be completed within 12 months of award start date or $2,000 for an at least four-week clinical preceptorship to be completed within 12 months of award start date.

Due to pre-existing inequities within our education system, the educational challenges posed by COVID-19 are having a disproportionate impact on BIPOC students. The Genentech Foundation is interested in funding programs that are responding to the challenges of COVID-19 and have a focus on BIPOC students, including (but not limited to):
- Innovative wraparound programs that provide student support beyond tuition that address disruptions or additional challenges brought on by COVID-19 (i.e., student mental health support to address COVID-related trauma)
- Bridge programming that ensures students continue their education and are prepared to be successful as undergraduates, particularly given the disruption to their K-12 education due to COVID-19
- Capacity building for institutions trying to react and respond to the many challenges posed by COVID-19 while maintaining a Diversity, Equity & Inclusion strategy that supports BIPOC students, faculty, and employees
- Programs that foster equitable environments that encourage experimentation and innovation for STEM faculty and leadership in light of changes to traditional educational models due to COVID-19
- Strong proposals will align with the following high-level outcomes:
- Despite the challenges of COVID-19, there is an increase in BIPOC students entering and persisting in postsecondary education
- Increase the number of faculty that are trained and have the necessary resources to successfully support BIPOC students in light of COVID-19
- Increase institutional capacity to navigate the many challenges posed by COVID-19 with an equity lens, and foster environments where BIPOC students and faculty feel supported to succeed

This program allows exceptional graduate students from the United States and abroad and medical and veterinary students in United States schools to spend time at Janelia working on all or part of their thesis research.
The Janelia Graduate Research Fellowship is a fully-funded, collaborative program for independent, committed PhD graduate students enrolled in accredited doctoral programs in the United States or abroad, and MD and DVM students enrolled at accredited United States medical and veterinary schools.* Required course work at the student’s home institution must be completed before joining Janelia. Degrees are granted by the home institution.

Students will conduct research at Janelia for a minimum of one year and a maximum of three years and will work with one or more research mentors at Janelia who will provide scientific and career guidance.
Janelia’s laboratories are intentionally small, giving graduate students individualized attention from a variety of senior scientists. Each visiting student will be paired with a research mentor.
