CDMRP Funding Deadlines

REMINDER: the following programs have deadlines approaching soon.  Remember, submission is a two-step process requiring both pre-application submission and full application submission. All pre-applications must be submitted through the electronic Biomedical Research Application Portal (eBRAP) (https://eBRAP.org/). Full applications from extramural organizations (non-DoD organizations) must be submitted through Grants.gov (https://www.grants.gov/).  Pre-applications do not require pre-award or OSP oversight.


Multiple Sclerosis Research Program

Clinical Trial Award
Pre-Application Deadline:  June 17, 2020

  • Pre-application submission is required; application submission is by invitation only.
  • Supports the rapid implementation of clinical trials with the potential to have a significant impact on the treatment or management of MS.
  • Funds Phase 0, I or II clinical trials relevant to MS; combinations of phases are permitted.
  • Funding must support a clinical trial and may not be used for preclinical studies.

Exploration - Hypothesis Development Award
Pre-Application Deadline:  June 17, 2020

  • Pre-application submission is required; application submission is by invitation only.
  • Supports the initial exploration of innovative, high-risk, high-gain, and potentially groundbreaking concepts in the MS research field.
  • New Investigator Option supports applicants early in their faculty appointments.
  • Preliminary data not required.
  • Clinical trials not allowed.

Investigator-Initiated Research Award
Pre-Application Deadline:  June 17, 2020

  • Pre-application submission is required; application submission is by invitation only.
  • Supports highly rigorous, high-impact research with the potential to make an important contribution to MS research and/or patient care.
  • Preliminary data required.
  • Clinical trials not allowed

Neurofibromatosis Research Program

Clinical Trial Award
Pre-Application Deadline:  June 25, 2020

  • Supports research with the potential to have a major impact on the treatment or management of neurofibromatosis (NF).
  • Funds Phase 0, I, or II clinical trials relevant to NF and/or schwannomatosis. Combinations of phases are permitted.
  • Must support a clinical trial and may not be used for preclinical research studies.

Exploration - Hypothesis Development Award
Pre-Application Deadline:  June 25, 2020

  • Supports the initial exploration of innovative, high-risk, high-gain concepts and potentially groundbreaking concepts in NF research.
  • Preliminary and/or published data encouraged but not required.
  • Projects involving human subjects or human anatomical substances must be exempt under 32 CFR 219.104(d) or eligible for expedited review under 32 CFR 219.110 or 21 CFR 56.110.
  • Clinical trials not allowed.

New Investigator Award
Pre-Application Deadline:  June 25, 2020

  • Supports the continued development of promising independent investigators and/or the transition of established investigators from other research fields into a career in NF research.
  • Prior experience in NF research is not required.
  • Preliminary and/or published data relevant to NF and the proposed research project is
  • required.
  • Clinical trials not allowed.

Early Investigator Research Award
Pre-Application Deadline:  June 25, 2020

  • Supports NF-focused research opportunities for individuals in the early stages of their
  • careers.
  • Investigators must have a designated mentor who is an experienced NF researcher

Synergistic Idea Award
Pre-Application Deadline:  June 25, 2020

  • Supports new ideas that represent synergistic approaches involving two or three Principal Investigators to address a central problem or question in NF research.
  • Preliminary and/or published data required.
  • Clinical trials not allowed.

Investigator-Initiated Research Award
Pre-Application Deadline:  June 25, 2020

  • Supports highly rigorous, high-impact research with the potential to make an important contribution to NF research and/or patient care.
  • Preliminary and/or published data required.
  • Optional Features:

    Applications meeting criteria identified in the program announcement may apply for a higher level of funding for the following options: Qualified Collaborator and/or NF Open Science Initiative (NF-OSI).

  • Clinical trials not allowed.

Peer Reviewed Medical Research Program

Investigator-Initiated Research Award
Pre-Application Deadline:  May 1, 2020

  • Pre-application submission is required; application submission is by invitation only.
  • Supports research that will make an original and important contribution to the field of research and/or patient care in the Topic Area(s) of interest.
  • Partnering PI Option available.
  • Clinical trials will not be funded

Technology/Therapeutic Development Award
Pre-Application Deadline:  May 1, 2020

  • Pre-application submission is required; application submission is by invitation only.
  • Supports the translation of promising preclinical findings into clinical applications for prevention, detection, diagnosis, treatment, or quality of life in the Topic Area(s) of interest.
  • Product-oriented (e.g., device, drug, clinical guidelines). The product(s) to be developed may be a tangible item, such as a pharmacologic agent (drugs or biologics) or device, or a knowledge-based product.
  • Clinical trials will not be funded.

Discovery Award
Pre-Application Deadline:  May 7, 2020

  • Supports the exploration of a highly innovative new concept or untested theory in the Topic Area(s) of interest.
  • Not intended to support the logical progression of an already established line of questioning.
  • Clinical trials will not be funded.
  • Reviewers will be blinded to the identity of the Principal Investigator (PI), collaborator(s), and their organization(s).

Investigator-Initiated Research Award (for Emerging Viral Diseases and Respiratory Health)
Pre-Application Deadline:  May 28, 2020

  • Supports research that will make an original and important contribution to the field of research and/or patient care in the Topic Areas of Emerging Viral Diseases and/or Respiratory Health.
  • Applications must address at least one of the Focus Areas published in the Program Announcement.
  • Partnering PI Option available.
  • Clinical trials will not be funded.

  • Supports the rapid implementation of clinical trials of novel interventions with the potential to have a significant impact on patient care in the Topic Areas of Emerging Viral Diseases and/or Respiratory Health.
  • Applications must address at least one of the Focus Areas published in the Program Announcement.
  • Proposed projects may range from small proof-of concept trials through large-scale, definitive trials.
  • IND or IDE applications to the FDA, if needed, should be submitted to the FDA before the PRMRP application submission deadline.

Clinical Trial Award
Pre-Application Deadline:  July 29, 2020

  • Supports the rapid implementation of clinical trials of novel interventions with the potential to have a significant impact on patient care in the Topic Area(s) of interest.
  • Proposed projects may range from small proof-of concept trials through large-scale, definitive trials.
  • Investigational New Drug (IND) or Investigational Device Exemption (IDE) applications to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), if needed, must be approved by the FDA before the PRMRP application submission deadline unless applying to the Planning Phase with Clinical Trial application category.
  • New for FY20: Optional Planning Phase available.
  • The Planning Phase will provide support to prepare and submit an IND/IDE application to the FDA; FDA/regulatory approval to proceed is required prior to exercising option for clinical trial.

Spinal Cord Injury Research Program

Clinical Trial Award
Pre-Application Deadline:  May 21, 2020

  • Preproposal is required; application submission is by invitation only.
  • Fund Phase 0, I, or II clinical trials with the potential to have a significant impact on the treatment or management of SCI.
  • Applications must include at least two individuals with lived SCI experience as members of the research team.
  • Preclinical data required for all clinical trial applications

Translational Research Award
Pre-Application Deadline:  May 21, 2020

  • Preproposal is required; application submission is by invitation only.
  • Fund translational research studies that accelerate the movement of promising ideas in SCI research into clinical applications.
  • Applications must include at least one individual with lived SCI experience as a member of the research team.
  • Preliminary data required.
  • The SCIRP TRA may include a pilot clinical trial as part of the proposed research where limited clinical testing of a novel intervention or device is necessary to inform the next step in the continuum of translational research

Investigator-Initiated Research Award
Pre-Application Deadline:  May 21, 2020

  • Pre-proposal is required; application submission is by invitation only.
  • Fund any phase of SCI-related research from basic through translational that has the potential to make an important contribution to SCI research, patient care, and/or quality of life.
  • Preliminary data required.
  •  Clinical trials not allowed.

Tick-Borne Disease Research Program

Career Development Award
Pre-Application Deadline:  May 27, 2020

  • To fund early-career investigators to conduct impactful research under the mentorship of an experienced tick-borne disease researcher.
  • Career Development Plan is required. Plan should be prepared with appropriate guidance from the Mentor, should clearly articulate a strategy for acquiring the necessary skills, competence, and expertise to establish a career at the forefront of tickborne disease research, and should outline how the PI will gain experience in tick-borne disease research. PI’s institution must demonstrate a commitment to the PI through a minimum of 75% protected research time for tick-borne disease research. The application must include clearly stated plans for interactions and communication coordination between the PI and Mentor.
  • Preliminary data is encouraged, but not required.
  • Clinical trials are not allowed.

Idea Award
Pre-Application Deadline:  May 27, 2020

  • To fund research that could lead to impactful discoveries or major advancements that will accelerate progress in improving outcomes for individuals affected by Lyme diseases and/or other tick-borne illnesses.
  • Research should be conceptually innovative, exhibit high levels of creativity, or challenge existing research paradigms.
  • Applications must describe the short- and long-term impact of the proposed research, as well as the public health burden of the diseases being addressed.
  • Preliminary data is encouraged, but not required.
  • Clinical trials are not allowed; human studies/clinical research are permitted.
