For over 50 years, the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America Foundation has helped thousands of scientists advance their careers and has inspired new generations to enter bio-pharmaceutial research. The early-career support provided by the
PhRMA Foundation has been a catalyst for our scientists to become leaders in their organizations and fields.  Programs help build a larger pool of highly-trained researchers to meet the growing needs of academic institutions, the government and the research-intensive pharmaceutical industry.

PhRMA Foundation award recipients will continue to play an instrumental role in substantial achievements in medicine for the benefit of public health and ultimately the patient.

2020 Awards in Pharmaceutics, Informatics and Pharmacology/Toxicology

Pre Doctoral Fellowships in Pharmaceutics
This award assists full-time, in-residence pharmaceutics or pharmaceutical engineering PhD candidates.  Applicants (U.S. and non-U.S. citizens) must hold a Pharm.D or a BS or MS from an accredited school in pharmacy or a related area. Applicants should expect to complete the requirements for a PhD in two years or less from the time the fellowship begins.

Post Doctoral Fellowships in Pharmaceutics
This award provides stipend support to well-trained PhD graduates or PhD candidates seeking to further develop and refine their pharmaceutics research skills through formal postdoctoral training.  Applicants (U.S. and non-U.S. citizens) must have a firm commitment from a sponsor/mentor at an accredited U.S. university. Applicants must 1) hold a PhD degree in pharmaceutics or appropriate terminal research doctorate in a field logically or functionally related to the proposed postdoctoral activities or 2) expect to receive the PhD before activating the award. Suitable facilities for necessary training and research must be available to the applicant.

Research Starter Grants in Pharmaceutics
This award offers financial support to individuals beginning independent research careers in pharmaceutics (including basic pharmaceutics, biopharmaceutics, pharmaceutical technology, and pharmaceutical biotechnology) at the faculty level.

Deadline: September 1, 2019 @ 11:59 PM EDT.

Pre-Doctoral Fellowship in Informatics
This award supports students in advanced stages of training and thesis research. This program supports full-time students (U.S. and non-U.S. citizens) who will have completed most of their pre-thesis requirements (at least two years of study) and be engaged in thesis research as PhD candidates by the time the award is activated. Due to the high demand for this fellowship, the PhRMA Foundation will accept only two applications per academic institution*.

• Post Doctoral Fellowship in Informatics
This award supports the post doctoral career development of individuals preparing to engage in research that will bridge the gap between experimental and computational approaches in biomedical studies.  Applicants (U.S. and non-U.S. citizens) must have a firm commitment from a sponsor/mentor at an accredited U.S. university or research institution where the research will be carried out. The sponsor/mentor of the post doctoral program must describe how the multidisciplinary goals of the proposed work will be accommodated and provide assurance that key collaborating mentors endorse and are willing to support the proposed research (which requires their letters of commitment as well). Applicants must 1) hold a PhD in a field of study logically or functionally related to the proposed post doctoral activities or 2) expect to receive the PhD before activating the award.

• Research Starter Grants in Informatics
This award assists individuals beginning independent research careers in informatics at the faculty level.  Applicants (U.S. and non-U.S. citizens) will be judged primarily on the scientific merit of the proposed research and secondarily on degree of financial need. Those holding academic rank of assistant professor (or research assistant professor) within a tenure (or research) track appointment at an accredited U.S. university or research institution, are eligible to apply for a Research Starter Grant, providing their proposed research is neither directly nor indirectly subsidized to any significant degree by an extramural support mechanism. A letter supporting the intended career path for the applicant is required from the Department or Division Chairman.

This program is not intended for those in postdoctoral training. However, individuals in postdoctoral training programs, who will hold an assistant (or research assistant) professor appointment at an accredited U.S. university or research institution by January 1, 2020 may apply.

Deadline: September 1, 2019 @ 11:59 PM EDT.

• Pre Doctoral Fellowship in Pharmacology/Toxicology
This award provides support for students in advanced stages of training and thesis research.  Applicants (U.S. and non-U.S. citizens) must be full-time, in-residence pharmacology or toxicology students enrolled in U.S. schools of medicine, pharmacy, public health, dentistry, or veterinary medicine. Eligible candidates will have completed most of their pre-thesis requirements (at least two years of study) and be engaged in thesis research as PhD candidates by the time the award is activated. Because of high demand for this fellowship, the PhRMA Foundation will accept only one application per academic institution*.

 Post Doctoral Fellowship in Pharmacology/Toxicology
This award provides stipend support for individuals engaged in a multi-disciplinary research training program that will create or extend their credentials and provide new skills in pharmacology or toxicology. Applicants (U.S. and non-U.S. citizens) must have a firm commitment from a sponsor/mentor at an accredited U.S. university. The awards support candidates proposing to gain new skills in relevant areas. Funding is for up to two years, but not beyond the third year of the existing post doctorate. While all applications involving pharmacology/toxicology research will be considered, preference will be given to individuals sponsored by a unit with responsibility for pharmacology/toxicology training and research as part of its core mission. Applicants must hold a PhD or appropriate terminal research doctorate in a field related to the proposed postdoctoral activities or expect to receive such a degree before activating the award

 Research Starter Grants in Pharmacology/Toxicology
This award assists individuals beginning independent research careers at the faculty level.  Applicants (U.S. and non-U.S. citizens)  may apply from any department but the successful applicant will have a proposed project that is pharmacological in nature, and share evidence that they have formal training in pharmacology/toxicology (e.g. Ph.D. or postdoctoral training in pharmacology, including pharmacology methods). Those holding the academic rank of Assistant Professor (or Research Assistant Professor) within a tenure track or (*equivalent tenure-track) appointment, or Instructor, if eligible to apply for independent research funding by their institution, are eligible to apply for these research starter grants, providing their proposed research is neither directly nor indirectly already being subsidized to any significant degree by an extramural support mechanism. Individuals receiving only intramural funding or start-up funding from their institution are eligible to apply for Research Starter Grant awards. Note: There are specific requirements for what constitutes a “tenure track.” Please click the “Eligibility” button within the link to learn more.
