Instructions for Preparing Proposals for McLaughlin Symposia
The James W. McLaughlin Fellowship Committee has established an international symposium series entitled "McLaughlin Symposia on Infection and Immunity" that will be held in Galveston. Themes for the symposia differ from year to year, and are chosen by the McLaughlin Committee from proposals submitted by UTMB faculty. The format of these symposia will consist of invited lecturers recognized as outstanding in their fields plus poster sessions/platform presentations.
All proposals must address the following points:
- Name of applicant: academic title, department, telephone, Fax, and e-mail
- Proposed title of your McLaughlin Symposium (topic must relate to infectious diseases and/or immunology).
- Names of prospective, internationally and nationally known scientists that could be invited and the general areas on which they could speak.
- Names and titles of other faculty at UTMB and elsewhere who support the idea for a symposium on this topic, and an indication of those who may serve as co-organizers.
- Overview of the theme of your planned Symposium with a focus on its uniqueness and ability to bring diverse faculty together (1 page or less).
- Discussion of how your planned Symposium will bring together groups of scientists who do not normally attend the same meetings.
- List of recent (or planned) meetings that did (or will) address similar topics.
- List of other foundations or professional societies that have either stated an interest in co-sponsorship, have been consulted about co-sponsorship, or who may be considered as co-sponsors for your Symposium.
- Status of activities to obtain funds from NIH (or other government agencies) or corporations to defray the cost of your Symposium.
- Specific audience for your Symposium and expected number of participants.
- Plans to involve faculty and trainee groups at UTMB.
- Business plan for the meeting to include an estimated budget, with a plan for collecting sufficient funds (i.e., registration, other support) in addition to the McLaughlin request.
Proposal submission
Proposals should be rendered into a single pdf file that includes the last name of the applicant in the filename and submitted to: McLaughlin.IHII@utmb.edu.
