Guidelines 2: New Applications

B. Vacation and Sick Leave
Postdoctoral fellows are eligible for vacation and sick leave under UTMB employee regulations. Records of these times may be recorded in the fellow's respective department utilizing the existing record keeping system applicable to UTMB employees.

Predoctoral fellows are not eligible for vacation and sick leave under UTMB employee regulations.

The McLaughlin Fellowship Fund Committee fully expects each fellow to perform his/her research and related scholarly events for at least the weekly time stipulated.

C. Acceptance of the Award
Please review the following information for clarification of academic performance and reports of research during fellowship period:

Responsibility of Fellows for Academic Performance. Acceptance of this award carries with it the responsibility to maintain high achievement in academic course work or directed research. Should the fellow fail to maintain satisfactory performance in the graduate school, in special courses, or in the postdoctoral program, or if conditions arise that cause extended absence from the training responsibilities beyond the approved vacation and sick leave, then the fellowship will be subject to immediate review by the McLaughlin Committee with the possibility of immediate termination of support.

Reports. Under no circumstances shall reports be made less frequently than once every twelve months.

The McLaughlin Committee must be notified as soon as reasonably practical by either the fellow or sponsor if: 1) difficulty is encountered achieving the proposed aims of the project, 2) if problems arise of an academic, physical, or psychological nature; or 3) problems involving significant interpersonal relationships which will hamper the conduct of the research.

D. Publication Acknowledgment
Any publication generated as a result of the Fellowship should be acknowledged in the manuscript, abstract, etc., with the wording:

"Supported by The James W. McLaughlin Fellowship Fund"

Two reprints of each publication should be submitted to the McLaughlin Fellowship Committee.

E. Benefit Supplement - Insurance
McLaughlin Fellows are eligible for all benefits of other regular University of Texas Medical Branch personnel. The McLaughlin Fund contributes premium sharing toward the purchase of optional insurance chosen by the fellow. The Texas Legislature mandates the amount of premium sharing.

Predoctoral Fellows Only: Predoctoral fellows are not eligible to be enrolled in the State of Texas Teacher Retirement Plan at this time.

Postdoctoral Fellows Only: Funds for staff benefits, such as Medical Malpractice Insurance, health insurance, disability, term life and accidental death insurance, may be reimbursed to the Fellow from sources other than the McLaughlin Fund with prior approval by the McLaughlin Committee. Also, a postdoctoral fellow has a choice of enrolling in the Optional Retirement Program or the Texas Teacher's Retirement Plan. If he/she chooses to enroll in the Optional Retirement Plan, he/she must do so within the first 90 days after his/her appointment date at UTMB. If he/she does not enroll within this time, he/she is enrolled automatically in the Texas Teacher's Retirement Plan. Employee benefits information should be obtained from the Human Resources Office, Second Floor, Administration Building.
