Guidelines 1: New Applications
Thank you for your interest in submitting an application for a predoctoral or postdoctoral fellowship from the McLaughlin Fellowship Program.
The James W. McLaughlin Fellowship Fund is dedicated to the establishment and maintenance of fellowships for individuals involved in the investigation of infection and/or immunity at The University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) in Galveston, Texas.
The intent of the McLaughlin Fellowship Fund is:
- To contribute to total scientific knowledge and to the scientific manpower pool in the field of infection and/or immunity through the training and encouragement of scientists.
- To promote the academic stature of UTMB through its activities in supporting worthwhile fellows who will be credits to the University.
- To enhance the atmosphere for scientific endeavors at UTMB.
Fellowships are awarded only to those individuals showing exceptional promise:
Postdoctoral fellowships are awarded to individuals holding doctoral degrees (i.e., Ph.D. or M.D.) and pursuing additional training in areas directly related to infection and/or immunity. Applicants are ineligible if they have previously held a faculty position. No postdoctoral fellow will be eligible for a McLaughlin Postdoctoral fellowship if she/he has received more than 36 months of research training prior to start date of the Fellowship (September 1). Postdoctoral fellowships are awarded on an employment rate of a forty-hour week (full-time) for a period of one year. Postdoctoral fellowships may not be supplemented in any fashion without prior approval by the McLaughlin Fellowship Committee; nor can faculty appointments be held within a department during their tenure as a McLaughlin Fellow. Fellowships may be renewed with the approval of the McLaughlin Fellowship Committee for one additional year.
Predoctoral fellowships are awarded to qualified students who are enrolled in the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences at UTMB. These fellowships are awarded on an employment rate of a twenty-hour week (half-time) for a period of one year. This twenty-hour week has been established in order to allow predoctoral fellows to earn supplemental income without jeopardizing the McLaughlin Fellowship. If a predoctoral fellow works in another job or area on campus (UTMB) in order to supplement his salary, the appointment cannot exceed twenty hours per week. Predoctoral fellowships may be renewed with the approval of the McLaughlin Fellowship Fund Committee for one additional year.
It is the responsibility of the applicant to become informed of the terms and conditions of McLaughlin awards.
A. The following summarizes major conditions of the fellowship awards.
Fellowships shall be for research and shall not require any other services to the University such as routine teaching or clinical duties.
Postdoctoral fellows may not hold a faculty appointment during their tenure as a postdoctoral fellow.
Salary supplementation of postdoctoral fellows from any source other than the McLaughlin Fund is expressly prohibited. Violations of these provisions will be grounds for termination of the fellowship.
The responsibility for satisfying the conditions of items on the Transmittal Page will reside with the applicant and his/her sponsor.
