The James W. McLaughlin Endowment, as part of its recognition for outstanding research in infection and immunity, offers several awards to McLaughlin Fellows, graduate and medical students, and postdoctoral fellows. They are as follows:
  1. James W. McLaughlin Award for Research Excellence in Infection and Immunity.
Nominations for these awards are open to all graduate students and postdoctoral fellows on UTMB campus. Two recipients are selected--one predoctoral and one postdoctoral. The awards consist of $500 and a McLaughlin bronze medallion. Nominations are solicited from UTMB faculty and the awards are presented at the Graduate School graduation exercises.
  2. National Student Research Forum.
Two awards are presented for research excellence in infection and immunity. Selection of recipients for these awards is delegated to NSRF. There are two awards--one for $200 and a plaque, another for $100 and a plaque. The NSRF is usually held in mid-April and presentations are made at the Forum.
  3. Annual McLaughlin Research Colloquium.
Awards are made to participants in the poster session of the Colloquium. There are normally five awards made for $1000 each to be used exclusively for travel to a national or international meeting. The Colloquium is held in mid-March and names of recipients are announced at the Colloquium.
  4. James W. McLaughlin Research Incentive Award.
This award is available only to McLaughlin Fellows and must be fulfilled within the first year of funding. The purpose of the award is to encourage McLaughlin Fellows to apply for extramural funding. The idea is to revise your McLaughlin proposal to fit the instructions of the funding agency. If extramural funding is received and it provides a MAJOR part of salary and other benefits, the McLaughlin Fellow will receive the following:
    1. a one-time award of $500 for predoctoral and $1000 for postdoctoral fellows which can be accepted as a cash award for personal use, or applied to either M&O or travel.
    2. Supplementation of salary, if stipend from the new source is less than anticipated from the McLaughlin Fund.
    3. Tuition fees in the amount of $400 if the new award does not include such fees (predoctoral only). A complete description of the incentive award is described in the section on "Progress Reports/Renewal Requests."
  5. McLaughlin Fellowship Fund Recruitment Award.
This award was established in 1995 and is open to undergraduate students who participate in the Summer Undergraduate Research Program. The objective of the award is to enhance the recruitment of highly qualified undergraduate students who have demonstrated a sincere desire to pursue a career in biomedical research. Recipients are selected by the Directors of the Summer Undergraduate Research Program, the Assistant Dean for Recruitment, and Alumni of the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. The dollar amount of the award is equivalent to one year’s travel and maintenance and operation budget for a predoctoral McLaughlin Fellow.
  6. McLaughlin Scholar Award
This award was established to make fellowship funds extend to as many fellows as possible. To this end, all McLaughlin fellows are expected to make a good faith effort to obtain support from external agencies. The fellows that are successful in obtaining one or more years of support receive a bonus of $1,500, and are awarded the title of "McLaughlin Scholar". If the support obtained from another source is less than that received through the McLaughlin Fellowship, the McLaughlin Committee will make up this salary difference.
