Animal Care and Use (IACUC)
Welcome to the Institutional Animal Care and Use (IACUC)
The Animal Welfare Act, as amended in 1985, places the following functions with the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC):
- Review, at least once every six months, the facility’s program for humane care and use of animals;
- Inspect, at least once every six months, all of the research facility’s animal facility’s including animal study areas;
- Prepare reports of its evaluations conducted;
- Review, and, if warranted, investigate concerns involving the care and use of animals at the research facility;
- Make recommendations to the Institutional Official regarding any aspect of the research facility’s animal program, facilities, or personnel training;
- Review all proposed activities related to the care and use of animals;
- Review all proposed significant changes regarding the care and use of animals in ongoing activities;
- Authorization to suspend an activity involving animals in accordance with the specification set forth.
Animal Protocols are the scientific blueprint and legal documentation of how a study will be conducted. Every research project requires a protocol that has been approved by the IACUC.
The IACUC is an Institutional Committee composed of scientists, veterinarians, graduate students and lay persons, and is charged with the task of determining the scientific merit and the welfare of the animal subjects.
New protocols are normally pre-reviewed by a Study Section on the second Tuesday of the month. The Full Committee normally meets on the fourth Thursday of every month as required to approve:
- New protocols
- Significant change amendments
- Continuing and Triennial reviews
Protocol reviews and amendments are reviewed by an ARC veterinarian and one board member and must be recommended for approval by both to be considered for final approval at the Full Committee meeting.
All new protocols shall be submitted to the IACUC office by the close of business on the 1 st working day of the month for review during that month.
Continuing and Triennial Review documents should be submitted to the IACUC office 45 days prior to expiration to ensure approval.
