Commercialization > Incubator
The UTMB business incubator is the first phase in the development of a Galveston Technology District. It is designed to give new biotech and biomedical companies’ lab and office space in close proximity to the UTMB research campus. Favored status is accorded to companies with substantial ties to UTMB proprietary intellectual property. The first phase of the project entails 5,000 square feet of space on three floors of the historic Galveston Customs House and was initiated in March 2002.
The business incubator provides limited quantities of specialized wet lab space outfitted with benches, fume hoods, sinks, deionized water. There are provisions for shared technical equipment for entrepreneurs and start-up companies at below market rates. Tenants share common conference rooms and kitchenette facilities. The facility also offers the benefits of 24-hour security and complete utilities. The UTMB Center for technology development office assists start up businesses with business counseling, entrepreneurial education and an infrastructure of support that enhances a tenant's probability of success.
The incubator offers clients a secure, high-quality office, laboratory and light manufacturing space at rates start-up companies can afford. At no extra charge, our tenants receive shared services typically too costly for individual investors to benefit from. These include:
- Receptionist
- Conference rooms
- Business & technology library
- Maintenance & custodial services
UTMB incubator clients also may take advantage of valuable professional services on a fee-waived or fee-reduced basis through affiliations with the following:
- Major accounting firms

- Full-service law firms
UTMB has assisted in the start up of 6 biomedical companies:
- Chrysalis Biotechnology, Inc.
