Jim Arie has been with the University of Texas Medical Branch since 1994. He has held numerous positions in Research Services, including manager of research contracts, acting director of the Clinical Research Office, interim director of the Technology Management Office, director of the Center for Technology Development and Assistant Vice President of the Center for Technology Development. He has had extensive experience during that time in developing and initiating training programs and seminars for faculty and staff covering the negotiation aspects of contracts, sponsored project budgets, subcontracts, and grants. He currently directs the program that is responsible for evaluating, protecting, and marketing the proprietary property that results from the research efforts at UTMB. His duties include establishing strong relationships with private industries in the medical and/or healthcare markets, ensuring that licenses and other research agreements comply with UT System policy, ensuring that UTMB inventions reach the market place as quickly as possible, assisting UTMB scientists in starting new biomedical companies, and overseeing the UTMB business incubator. Prior to being at UTMB, he held positions at Texas A&M University including associate director of the Center for Hazard and Disaster Recovery and Remediation and assistant director of the Center for Housing and Urban Development.
