BIOHAZARD RED BAG WASTE
|
RADIOACTIVE MATERIAL
-
Package and document all waste and unwanted material
-
Contact EHS at ext 22279 to schedule waste pickup
-
DO NOT schedule radioactive material delivery until further notice
|
CHEMICALS
PLEASE FOLLOW THE PROCEDURES BELOW FOR REMOVAL & DISPOSAL:
-80C and -20C FREEZERS / REFRIGERATORS
- Verify that temperature is correct (if still on emergency power reduce temp to -60C; if temp is incorrect please notify EHS with building, room#, tag#, and PI)
- All biological material and rDNA that needs to be discarded must be placed in red bags, see #1 –
DO NOT OPEN – Place directly into red bags
- Keep an inventory or take pictures for insurance purposes
- Take boxes to dock for pick-up
- Place all unwanted chemicals in a box and contact EHS to schedule pickup
MEDIA/REAGENTS (non-hazardous)
- Pour down drain with plenty of water
- If molded – bleach before discarding
COLD ROOM
- Verify temperature (if temp is incorrect please notify EHS with building, room#, tag#, and PI)
- See #1, 2, and 3 above for biological, chemical, and radioactive waste removal instructions.
- Decontaminate all other material with Cavicide and 70% ethanol.
INCUBATORS – biological waste
- All biological and rDNA must be discarded in red bags, see #1
- Remove water in pan and pour down the drain
- Clean according to manufacturer’s recommendations or with Cavicide then 70% Ethanol.
WATER BATHS
- Remove water and pour down sink drain
- Clean according to manufacturer’s recommendations or with Cavicide then 70% Ethanol.
ELECTRONIC WASTE
- Decontaminate all unwanted equipment
- Contact EHS for disposal instructions
- Please provide equipment type, tag#, room#, and PI
BREAK ROOM REFRIGERATORS
- Discard food into garbage bags
- Decon inside of refrigerator with Cavicide then 70% Ethanol
MOLDY PAPERS, FOOD, ETC.
- Even though these may be an allergy concern, they are NOT to be discarded into red biohazard bags/boxes
- DISCARD IN GARBAGE BAGS
*REMEMBER:
- DO NOT use biohazard boxes/bags to transport files, personal possessions, etc.
- DO NOT REMOVE computers/lab equipment without filling out proper documentation (See EHS MRB office and get authorization from PI or Dept. chair)
- NO SANDALS allowed in laboratories – wear closed toe shoes.
