5) What is the UTMB indirect cost rate and how is it calculated for grants?
The University of Texas Medical Branch has an indirect cost rate of 53% modified total direct costs. Modified total direct costs consist of all salaries and wages, fringe benefits, materials and supplies, services, travel and subgrants and subcontracts up to $25,000 of each subgrant or subcontract. Equipment, capital expenditures, charges for patient care and tuition remission, rental costs, scholarships and fellowships as well as a portion of each subgrant and subcontract in excess of $25,000 shall be excluded from modified total direct costs.
6) What does "cost sharing" mean?
If any employee is contributing a greater percentage of effort to the project than is reflected by the salary requested, a department account number must be provided that will indicate the source of the funds. There is space provided for this information on the Proposal Routing Form.

Expanded authorities are recent federal policy changes that waive the prior approval requirements for some actions on some federal grants. These actions include grant extensions, incurred pre-award costs, carryover of unobligated balances, and rebudgeting.
Expanded authorities apply only to the R series of Research Grants except for R10, R18, and R43.
