SYNOPSIS:
Two-year fellowships are provided for research on any aspect of
sexually transmitted diseases. The first-year stipend is $27,500, and
the second is $28,750. Post-doctoral investigators at established
institutions within the U.S. and its territories are eligible. Research
must be conducted under the sponsorship of established STD investigators.
The sponsor has supported research projects in the areas
of chancroid, chlamydia, gonorrhea, group B streptococcal infection,
herpes, HIV, HPV, PID, and syphilis. Most projects have been in basic
science but applications that address clinical issues are also acceptable.
This year, the sponsor encourages applications in clinical research. In
the area of HIV, priority will be given to those projects that explore the
relationship between HIV and other STDs.
Requests for applications are usually issued in May of odd-numbered
years, with an application deadline of October 15.
Eligible applicants must hold an M.D. or Ph.D. This year the sponsor is
encouraging applications from M.D.s. There are no citizenship
requirements, but investigators must be studying at established
institutions within the U.S. or its territories.

Fellowship support is provided for the development of new approaches,
methodologies and knowledge in infectious disease prevention and control

SYNOPSIS:
The ARC offers the following Fellowships in 2000: Australian
Postdoctoral Research Fellow; Australian Research Fellow/Queen Elizabeth
II Fellow; and Australian Senior Research Fellow. ARC Fellowships are
open to world wide competition, in any field except clinical medicine and
dentistry. Except in the case of QEII awards, preference may be given to
Australian citizens and permanent residents, if candidates are judged equal
in merit. For support in 2000, applicants may submit one application only,
through one institution only, in one category only. There will be no
opportunity to be re-categorised after submission, either by the applicant
or by the RTCC.
(1)POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH FELLOWSHIPS - applicants must have submitted their

March 1996. Approximately 55 Australian Postdoctoral Research Fellowships
with a maximum tenure of three years are available. The salary range is

SYNOPSIS:
Support is provided for fellowships aimed at further advancing
biomedical research in Canada relevant to gastroenterology. Applicants
are graduates of a medical school or those who hold a Ph.D. degree. The
award will provide a salary and operating expenses for a period of two
years (minimum value of $50,000 Canadian per annum).
Research proposals will be considered for funding in
the following areas: helicobacter pylori (including therapeutic targets,
vaccines, drug resistance, microbial metabolism, extraintestinal
manifestations); inflammatory bowel disorders (immuno modulators, microbial
contributions); control of the lower esophageal sphincter; irritable bowel
syndrome (outcome variables in clinical trails, kappa opiods).
Medical graduates must have completed clinical residency
training in a recognized adult or pediatric gastroenterology (or
equivalent) training program (inside or outside of Canada) to the extent
that they are eligible to write Royal College (or equivalent) certification
exams at the time of starting the award. Doctoral graduates (Ph.D. degree
from a recognized university inside or outside Canada) will be eligible to
hold an award if they have five years or less of postdoctoral training at
the time of starting the award. The fellow need not be a Canadian citizen
or landed immigrant, but preference will be given to candidates whose

cell anemia, and other blood disorders. Awards will be for $100,000 per

The sponsor's definition of

pathogenesis of these diseases in humans; therapeutic interventions;
